Lego Disney Princess: The Castle Quest
Promoting powerhouse diversity and pushing away the trappings of romance, “Moana” is a progressive step carrying wonderful messages for young girls in a Millennial day-and-age that is too often obsessed with body image and glamour. On October 7, 2015, Walt Disney Animation Studios released a video announcing the casting of 14-year-old Hawaiian native, Auli’i Cravalho, who will officially portray Moana. After directing The Princess and the Frog, Musker and Clements started working on an adaptation of Terry Pratchett’s Mort, but rights problems prevented them from continuing with that project. To avoid similar problems, they pitched three new ideas, and in 2011 started developing the film based on an original idea. It’s actually a mollusk, and you find this on all the Pacific Islands; it’s something they use quite a bit. When Moana left Motunui to find Maui and restore the Heart of Te Fiti, upon learning she had been chosen by the Ocean to do so, she was surprised to discover that Heihei had stowed away on her boat.
One day, Maui, the shape-shifting demigod of the wind and sea and master of wayfinding, stole Te Fiti’s heart to give humanity the power of creation. This caused Te Fiti to disintegrate, and Maui was attacked by Te Kā, a volcanic demon. Maui lost both the heart and his magic fish hook to the depths of the sea.
The franchise consists of three feature films, a short film, several video games, and two theme park attractions. Unwilling to lose his hook in another confrontation, Maui abandons a tearful Moana who asks the ocean to find someone else to restore the heart and loses hope. The ocean obliges and takes the heart, Moana breaks down crying feeling hopeless but Tala’s spirit appears, inspiring Moana to find her true calling. Maui returns, having had a change of heart, and buys Moana time to reach Te Fiti by fighting Te Kā, destroying his hook in the process. Moana discovers Te Fiti is missing, and realizes Te Kā is Te Fiti, corrupted without her heart.
Lego Disney Princess: Villains Unite
Moana and Heihei sail for Motunui and arrive as the island is recovering from the curse entirely. Having restored the safety of the sea, Moana takes her place as a Chieftess of Motunui and the people of the village break out their ancestor’s boats. Voyaging begins anew, and Moana leaves her mark of leadership on Motunui’s sacred mountain- a seashell, symbolizing the unity of her duties to her people and her passion for the ocean. They set sail once more, but a down-on-his-luck Maui feels unable to defeat Te Kā and restore the heart without his hook.
Fishing For Easter Eggs
She connects with Te Fiti and opens her eyes to show her what she has become. Te Fiti calms down and lets Moana restore her heart which brings everything, including herself, back to normal. Immediately after Heihei eats the heart during an encounter with little pygmy pirates known as Kakamora, the Kakamora steal Heihei forcing Moana to retrieve it, after Maui learns of her inability to sail when they try to escape. After Moana retrieves Heihei from the Kakamora, Maui is able to get their massive sailboats to collide into each other and the three make it out unharmed. In order to do so, he needs his hook which is hidden in the Realm of Monsters, held by a giant villainous coconut crab named Tamatoa. In his lair, Maui barely retrieves his magical fish hook while Moana distracts Tamatoa by having him sing about himself.
Expanded franchise
Born on the island village of Motunui, Moana is the eldest daughter of Tui and Sina, granddaughter of Tala, and the older sister of Simea, with an inherited love for the ocean and voyaging. Even though Moana loves the ocean, her parents aren’t happy about her decision. When her island becomes endangered due to the threat posed by an angry Te Kā, Moana is chosen by the Ocean to journey across Oceania to the island of Te Fiti to restore the heart stolen by Maui, and save her people.
- Moana then saw Tala reveal that Te Kā’s curse has now reached Motunui and was shocked to hear Tala also reveal she had been chosen by the Ocean to save all of Polynesia from Te Kā’s curse as she was given the Heart of Te Fiti.
- Though Maui commends her on surviving, he still refuses to help return the heart.
- Just then, Moana is acquainted with the ocean, which reveals itself to have a mind of its own.
- Her mother Sina confesses that her father acts like this because of the loss of his closest friend when they went sailing to unforgiving waters one night in his youth.
- Having restored the safety of the sea, Moana takes her place as a Chieftess of Motunui and the people of the village break out their ancestor’s boats.
- Moana fails to heed her father’s words and waddles to the ocean shores in bliss.
Deleted Scene: Grandmother’s Warning/Legend Of Maui
- Moana agrees to go through a ceremony with her father to be named a legendary wayfinder like her ancestor Tautai Vasa.
- After successfully restoring the Heart of Te Fiti and saving Motunui, Moana began a new era of wayfinding where she was watched by her grandmother’s manta ray reincarnation, showing she was still being looked after by Tala through a different life form.
- The plan goes astray so Moana dives in and successfully touches the sunken island, breaking the curse.
- Through some encouragement from Moana, Maui is given the strength to shape shift with ease, even managing to turn into a hawk.
- She mournfully confesses her incompetence and demands that the ocean chooses someone else to restore the heart.
- Finding a deserted island to beach the raft on and regroup, it is there that Moana finds the remains of Tautai Vasa’s raft, indicating that he and those with him were killed by Nalo before they could reach Motufetu.
Maui begins to pull up Motufetu with his giant hook, but Nalo strips Maui of his demigod powers with a lightning bolt. Moana, in a moment of desperation, dives into the ocean to touch Motufetu underwater, but as she succeeds, Nalo’s lightning kills her. Maui jumps in after her body, and with a magical chant, summons the spirits of Tautai Vasa and Moana’s ancestors, including her grandmother Tala, who help revive her as a demigoddess, with Moana gaining a wayfinder’s tattoo. Maui, also regaining his powers as a demigod, finally raises Motufetu and helps Moana reconnect the people with the ocean.
Moana 2 premiered at the Lanikuhonua Cultural Institute in Kapolei, Hawaii, on November 21, 2024, and was released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures in the United States on November 27. The film received mixed reviews from critics and grossed $1.059 billion worldwide, outgrossing its predecessor and becoming the third highest-grossing film of 2024. It was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards. A “meta” version of the character appears with other Disney princesses and Elsa and Anna from Frozen (2013) in the Wreck-It Ralph (2012) sequel, Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018). When some of the princesses describe to Vanellope von Schweetz how they stare at “important water” to gain inspiration for their songs, Moana says she stares at the ocean.
Maui, in return, is granted a new hook Moana and flies off to meet with his villagers. Before leaving, Maui bids Moana farewell with a hug, thanking her for all she’s done. The crew returns home to Motunui, leading a flotilla of the peoples of the ocean, and a celebration is held in Moana’s honor. In a mid-credits scene, Nalo plans his revenge and is about to punish Matangi for helping Moana, when the giant crab Tamatoa arrives to join his cause.
